Ultra Inspired by the Javelina Jundred

This past weekend I was part of the Javelina Jundred Social Media Team.  One of our duties was to keep track of and live-tweet updates from the course and mainly on the top male and female runners in the lead.

Catlow Shipek, winner of JJ100

It was a blast learning the ropes from behind the scenes, and seeing some really amazing runners.

The lead male finished the 100 mile race in just under 15 hours!

And the lead female, she not only came in 3rd overall... she also BROKE the women's course record!  Her finish time was 15:40:55.

And she looked strong every time she came in for a new loop.

Besides tracking these amazing elites throughout the race, I also tracked Gordy Ainsleigh, the pioneer of the 100-mile trail ultramarathon.

Even members of the Tarahumara Indian Tribe (featured in Born to Run) were there!  It was truly and amazing event and experience.

As if that wasn't enough, I continued to find inspiration in the rest of the runners tackling either the 100k or 100 miles.  I saw some with huge grins trotting along, while others looked beaten and I could physically see the pain on their faces.  Nonetheless each and every one of them were amazing. And some completely dressed up in costume the entire time!  I was honored just to be snapping pics of each and every one of these amazing people!

I've said I wanted to break into the ultra world, and helping out at this race has not only re-ignited the passion... but already has me searching for which races I want to do.  I strongly believe that 2015 will finally be the year I make the leap.

That being said, I need some suggestions!  Do YOU know of an ultra great for beginners?  Any advice for a novice ultra runner?  Let me hear 'em all in the comments below!  And as always, thanks for reading!

  3. I have done one ultra, a 50k, and the best advice I can give you is It's OK to walk! I walked all the hills in my Ultra.
Also - don't go in severely under trained as I did. Other than that, I can't wait for you to break into the Ultra scene!
    Good luck!
